Used Guitar Buyers Guides

The Used Guitar marketplace has provided the biggest bang for the ole buckaroo here at CheapGuitarZine. You just have to be willing to live with a guitar that's got some nicks, bruises and dings."

The way we look at it is: either you put the dings, scrapes and bruises in the guitar, or someone else did. Because all guitars get dinged up, unless you only play them occasionaly and with the utmost in sensitivity and care each time.

If you're still learning, this even more common than not. And if you don't have a big enough budget, well, get used to the USED market, because that's where you'll usually find the BEST guitars.

Used is where you separate the Junk from the Gold!

It's quite a contradiction, but we will state it once and for all here on the World Wide Web for all to see: BRAND NEW guitars have more potential to be JUNK than used ones!!! There we've said it. There's just one HUGE issue in the used guitar market:

You have to know how to:
  • identify them
  • search for them
  • recognize trends
  • have some working knowledge of guitar repair & maintenance
  • realize that sometimes you're just lucky!

  • Factors That Work For You

In a word: depreciation. Buyers lose between 10%-50% of the price they paid after buying a brand-new guitar. Certain models are exceptions, there's no doubt about that. But it definitely applies when you're shopping in the $100-$500 price range that we focus on. And the longer one waits to sell the guitar, the more depreciation accumulates.

This works in your favor because if you focus on the used market, you can set your sights on higher end models that have depreciated to your budget. Which leads us to the condition that many used guitars can be found in.

Passion cools. Many players who buy guitars purchase on impulse and emotion. After the passion for the hardware subsides, the guitar gets left in the case more and more. Then the case gets put in the far reaches of a clothes closet.

Then years later when the kid grows up and is on his or her way out of college/med school/law school (pick one that best applies), the guitar finds its way to:
    • a) craigslist
    • b) ebay
    • c) yard sale
    • d) Salvation Army
    • e) the next generation of aspiring guitar heros (otherwise known as your younger brother, sister, cousin, friend, neighbor, paperboy)
If you're a regular reader on this site and have subscribed to our Free zine, you'll continue to be educated about how to use all of these factors in your favor.
