Used acoustic guitars can either be every guitar players answer to his or her dreams or a nightmare. Due to varying levels of care given to these somewhat delicate instruments, a prospective buyer needs to be educated as to which warning signs to look out for.
You'll notice, for one, that when you're sampling new acoustic instruments at large or high-end shops, they keep these instruments in a separate, humidity controlled room. Well, they intend you to continue this level of care once the guitar is taken to your home. But this doesn't always necessarily happen.
This is not to say that you can't find incredible deals in this category. Far from it! In fact, if a buyer is a)lucky b)patient and/or c)determined enough, this area could by far yield the greatest discounts in the world of guitars.
The used acoustic guitars pictured on this site were purchased for $500 or less and they both came with hard cases. The top guitar is a Fender Nylon String Cutaway Electric Acoustic (Model GN-45SCE). The jumbo bodied beauty is a Taylor 355-model 12 string.
Brand-new list price for the Fender is in the $650-$700 price range while the Taylor 12 would set you back around $1000. Note that the 355 model has been discontinued, which can sometimes work for or against you depending on the particular model and cult-status associated with it.
The Fender was found through Ebay and the Taylor was sold to us through one of our students for $500 cash plus a few free guitar lessons. Remember, money isn't everything when it comes to getting the axe of your dreams. Use time, determination, gift-for-gab, donations or anything at your disposal as currency.
Buying Tips:
#1 Check straightness of the neck. Stay away from high-action and bows
#2 Check the bridge for paper thin spaces between it and the soundboard. Stick a piece of paper or business card all around the bridge where it meets the soundboard. Spaces are an indication that the bridge will soon separate from the body.
#3 Inspect the area around the bridge by putting your eyes parallel with the soundboard's plane. Any bulging means its about to rip off.
