Tascam Guitar Trainer

Tascam Guitar Trainer technology basically combines a portable guitar amp, effects board and mp3 player into a miniature recording and learning studio for today's digital guitar player--from beginner level up to seasoned pro.

Tascam GT-R1 Multi-Functional Trainer/Digital Recorder

If you've never experienced what a guitar trainer can do, you are probably about to advance your guitar playing by quantum leaps.

The primary benefit is the ability to take a fast guitar phrase and slow it down to a more reasonable speed so you can: a) learn the notes, b) practice different fingerings and c) build your speed.

It allows anyone with a decent working knowledge of the guitar to learn solos, riffs, chords, chord progressions and rhythms in tiny, easily digestible chunks. MMmmmm...chunks are good.

The new TASCAM GT-R1 features an amazing condenser mic built in for acoustic recording. But also allows for direct injection electric guitar and bass recording, in beautiful in WAV or MP3 format, which can be easily transferred to any computer.

All the info online states that this new recorder comes with 1 GB SD, but ours came with a 2 GB.

Features

Multiple inputs/outputs are always welcome on all guitar equipment.

The GT-R1 allows you to plug your guitar directly into the unit using a standard 1/4" guitar cord and has 1/8" Line In, Line Out and headphones jack. The GT-R1 model also includes an amazing condenser mic that's built in for acoustic recording.

The fun begins here:

  • distortion, overdrive, reverb, chorus, flange, delay, harmonizer, auto wah, phaser, compression, more effects
  • 10 tone banks for your preset effects settings
  • Loop function repeats any phrase you want with In/Out buttons
  • Slow down music phrases, solos, riffs, without change in pitch
  • Change key without slowing down music
  • chromatic tuner
  • lots more that I've never touched

Make A Practice Amp with Computer Speakers

Just plug the TASCAM Guitar Trainer into the AC power supply (highly recommeded accessory, even though the newer models use a NiCad which last quite a few hours. However, without the AC apaptor you'll need to use the USB connection to charge the battery--which isn't always reliable)

Using any set of computer speakers, plug right into the Tascam's Line Out input, plug in your electric guitar, and start jamming. Turn on backing tracks to deepen your experience.

I've already taken the time to set up a bunch of my tone banks--there's one for heavy metal, one for rock, a clean tone, one with a Leslie speaker effect on it.

So depending on what I'm trying to learn or play, I've got all my effects ready to go without setting up huge amps and pedalboards.

Using the battery power, I'm able to practice while on the road: If I'm early for an appointment and have some time on my hands, I'll pull over in a nice area like a park or uncrowded parking lot, plug the Tascam and guitar in and start playing through the car speakers using the MP3 accessory jack (1/8") on the stereo.

With the windows rolled down, you'll be able to serenade people as they pass by.

    Highly Recommended

The GT-R1 passes our test for over-delivery of functionality, bang for the buck and "cool gadget factor"
