Kids Acoustic Guitar

The Kids Acoustic Guitar category is probably one of the most important on this site.

Why? Because this category really defines the term cheap guitars.

Most of these guitars are in the $50 range and hail from any number of known and unknown manufacturers.

Another reason: the kids acoustic guitar can make or break a kid's "career" in music, depending on which make/model parents purchase. Because the prices are so very low, poor manufacturing leads to terrible playability or even un-playability!

The guitar can be a challenging instrument to learn, you'll hold your child back and even discourage him or her by purchasing the wrong instrument. The Kids Acoustic Guitar category is defined by children in their pre-teens. Once kids get to their teenage years, most can play regular sized instruments. So depending on the size of your child, you'll be looking at either 1/2 sized instruments or 3/4 sized.

The 1/2 sizes are good for any kid age 5-8 who expresses an interest in playing. The 3/4 sizes can be used by the 8-12 year olds. Again, these age groups are rough estimates as some kids have smaller/larger arms and hands.

You be the judge. If your child is bigger than normal, he or she may be able to use a regular sized instrument.

Stand-out models in this field come from large manufacturers like Squier, First Act, Baby Taylor and Daisy Rock. You'll also find quite a few little-known or unknown brands when shopping in this field.

Write-ups and reviews of these models are coming, so check back often. Keep in mind that for younger kids, there are many border-line toys that are masquerading as real instruments. Chances are, if you're shopping in a toy store, you'll be buying a toy. Real music stores carry real instruments. But even so, 1/2-sized guitars will probably get abused by your younger child. Luckily the replacement price is very low--anywhere in the $40-$60 range.

Pink guitars, black guitars and graphics are now common, enticing even more kids to get into the act. And guitars made specifically for girls are a new phenomenon witnessed in the past few years. These can all be found at music instrument dealers.
